I have just seen the movie and I liked it more than any other movie about catholic persecution of witches. Religious persecution and sadism towards imprisoned women, particularly those that won't cooperate. She admits to the parish priest Schmidt that she intended to give it to the midwife Groerová to heal her ailing cow. A priest travels to investigate a miller suspected to be working with the devil. Sort by ... you might lose a little meaning in the subtitles, but the film is still worth watching, regardless.

After watching 29 Czech films from the Cold War era in April,I started searching round for a title to finish my viewing season.Since starting things with Otakar Vávra's superb Sci-Fi Film Noir Krakatit,I was delighted to stumble upon another Vávra film,which led to me getting ready to surf the Czech wave for the final time.

It's well worth persevering with however as the story covers the 17th Czech witch trials and it works well on that level. Blasphemy it is, but a zealous priest insists there must be more to it and demands an inquisition. Was this review helpful?

Anybody expecting this to be in the same vein as Witchfinder General is possibly going to be a little bit disappointed.
