Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) is recognized as the founder of American landscape architecture and the nation's foremost parkmaker. Olmsted designed Stanford’s master campus plan in the fall of 1886. When Olmsted was 14 years old, sumac poisoning seriously affected his eyesight and limited his education. He also divided the park into two portions. Prospect Park is the second largest park in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City (after Marine Park). Olmstead directed the layout of the estate and persuaded the family to include a 250-acre commercial timber forest.Many New Yorkers do not know that, in addition to Central Park, Olmsted and Vaux also designed Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, a 585-acre green space sandwiched at the nexus of the borough’s Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Windsor Terrace, Ditmas Park, and Lefferts Gardens neighborhoods. It was designed by Olmsted in 1874 right after he dissolved his partnership with Vaux.
