Creepier than anything David Lynch, and that shows what a great director Polanski is since this is not his usual type of work, and it is BRILLIANT.
After an apartment-warming party thrown by a group of obnoxious coworkers, Trelkovsky comes under increased, seemingly inexplicable scrutiny by the fellow occupants in his building; the rest of the film chronicles his mental deterioration and gives us a thorough mindfu*k on par with the later efforts of David Lynch. And then they are found to be true again.
Roman Polanski's "The Tenant" was the official French entry at Cannes last May, and in the riot to get into the press screening one man was thrown through a glass door and two more found themselves amid the potted palms. Polanski plays the Pole and does a serviceable job. The trees surrounding the complex were well manicured, the landlord was a nice, middle-aged lady who always smiled and waved when she saw me. It demands attention and may be boring for people who just want plain action or a quick succession of blood curdling horror scenes. Was this review helpful? All those Oscar winners, Melvyn Douglas, Jo Van Fleet, Lila Kedrova and Shelley Winters for goodness sake - permeating the horrible attraction to the building - yes just like in Apartment Zero. I vividly remember Ebert giving it one star and it was supposedly booed at Cannes. This magical locker might even have adjusted the fabric of the food to account for how I've drifted, physically and otherwise, a sort of dynamic chemistry of expectations. Like most works of art, it's not for everybody, I know some people I admire who, hate, hate! On the one hand Trelkovski seems so nice and even cute in his shy behaviour, but on the other hand he beats this boy on the playground and there is no explanation for that. Scene by scene, Polanski allows the tension to build up in such a way that by the end the viewer is left both exhausted and wanting more.
Still, The Tenant has deeper literary roots. Polanski finds the invisibility of his characters and makes something enormous out of it. Was this review helpful? Yes, I do realize what a "hater" comment that is to make but I quite frankly cant see any other reason for why ANYONE would give this piece of garbage a high rating. Polanski stars as Trelkovsky, a Polish-born French citizen who moves into an apartment whose previous tenant committed suicide. Highly recommended for lovers of good film. He visits not for concern for the girl but with hopes that she will die and he will land her apartment. A classic yet left of center twisted tale of possible haunting and one definitely about a descent into madness. And these egyptian hieroglyphs and other egyptian stuff ? There were large tracts within that were just plain boring, and though Polanski is definitely one of the greatest directors of all time - he can and has been guilty of downplaying scenes too much. It has to be the weird script which hints at story lines and never really explains any of the action, particularly the ending. After the death of Simone, Trekovsky feels obsessed for her and believes his landlord and neighbors are plotting a scheme to force him to also commit suicide. The unfriendly concierge (Shelley Winters) and the tough landlord Mr. Zy (Melvyn Douglas) establish stringent rules of behavior and Trekovsky feels ridden by his neighbors. He becomes convinced that the other tenants are trying to turn him into the woman who committed suicide. In my opinion, the inspiration for this movie came right from the great works of European literature -- the influence of Edgar A. Poe, E.T.A. Roman Polanski not only directs but also plays the title character, to perfection, I hasten to ad. 0 Shares. It took a long time until I could find the title in a special videothek in Berlin, and I was lucky to find an english version with hollandish undertitles.
