Ivanhoe Crossing has long been a popular place for 4WD enthusiasts to cross in their vehicles, but after floodwaters caused damage to its structure in 2011, the crossing was closed to traffic. The death of a six -year-old girl at Ivanhoe Crossing last week could have been prevented, according to a former Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley council member.Large rocks had previously been in place to slow down water travelling through the crossing, and had acted as a safety barrier for those swimming at the spot. The rocks were removed during contracted repairs in late 2015, and former council member Simone Rushby said the decision to re-open the crossing without them had proved increasingly dangerous. "When they weren't put back, we warned there would be a death," she said. The decision to re-open the crossing without the rocks had been made after a public forum with local residents, councillors, the Department of Parks and Wildlife, the Water Corporation and Main Roads WA.Almost all residents agreed the crossing should be re-opened to allow traffic to flow steadily in the dry season, and it was believed people who chose to swim in the area did so at their own risk.Despite former councillor Darren Spackman's grave warning of the safety risks associated with their absence, the council chose to abide by the decision made in the forum.
